If you're reading this, you're probably in the midst of making one million decisions, and how you choose your bar mitzvah photography is one of the bigger ones.
So, how much should you actually expect to pay for a bar mitzvah photographer in the Bay Area?
The short answer is most professional b’nai mitzvah photography will fall somewhere around $1,500–$4,000+, depending on how much coverage you need.
For a professional East Bay or Bay Area B'nai Mitzvah photographer, I'd generally expect:
$1,000–$1,500: Shorter coverage or a more limited package
$1,500–$2,500: Several hours of coverage, portraits, and the service
$2,500–$4,000+: Longer coverage including the reception or party
$4,000+: Extensive coverage, multiple photographers, albums, video, or other premium services
Whether you're trying to get that target price down or you're trying to make the most of the money you are already shelling out, here are some tips (from a Bay Area Jewish Photographer!) to make your photography allotment stretch.
How many hours of photography do you need?
A photographer covering only the pre-service portraits will cost considerably less than someone who covers the entire day and night.
Think about which parts of the day you want documented:
Pre-service portraits (~ 1h hour)
These can cost as low as $600-$900 and you can get some really incredible shots. I highly recommend these if you're wanting a more budget-friendly option. Bonus tip: ask your Rabbi if you can do some posed shots with the Torah before the service -- these make for absolutely incredible posed portraits that capture the spirit of the day.
Family and extended-family photos (~ 30 minutes)
These tend to be a premium as they are much harder for photographers to shoot and edit, usually an additional $400-$700. I always recommend keeping this as short as possible, sometimes even 15 minutes. Even the smiliest kids get tired after not very long, and taking posed portraits can wear them out more than reading Torah! Many photographers will charge extra for portraits, including me, since they take significantly more time to edit than typical candid photos.
The Torah service (~ 1-3 hours)
Photos of the service will definitely increase your cost by minimum $1000 but can cost much more depending on the photographer. Many parents want to capture this core aspect of the bar/bat mitzvah, but if you were able to have a robust, well-planned pre-service portrait session, it's often somewhat redundant. That being said, the right photographer will capture the special glances between you and your kid, or those L'dor V'dor-able moments.
Kiddish/luncheon, speeches, dancing and games, candid family and friend moment (~ 2 hours)
After-service celebration photos tend to add around $1000, as well, but often are included in photography bundles, so check with your photographer. As a photographer, I love doing Kiddish photos since everyone is happy and relaxed, but in my opinion, these photos are the thing you can most easily cut out. It's nice to have professional photos of your luncheon (particularly if you have really nice catering and fun activities), but if you need to cut out anything, it would be this.
Party (~ 3 hours)
This is a really fun thing to capture on camera, and it tends to be an additional $1000-$3000. Keep in mind, adding nighttime party photos means the photographer is working from morning until late at night and will come home to 5000+ photos to go through and edit. One tip: hire a photographer you could see at the event. I've found that more outgoing photographers tend to feel more comfortable in these spaces and get people's real personalities on camera.
If I were choosing a budget-friendly option, I'd choose pre-service portraits and a photographer for the party. As a photographer, I'd offer this for $1800-$2800 depending on the client's desires. (If you like this, feel free to reach out and we can chat!)
If I had a budget of $3600, I'd opt for a bundle. For example, for $3600 I offer pre-service portraits, ceremony coverage, Kiddish/luncheon coverage, and party coverage.
One last thing:
Trust that you're getting your money's worth.
I know that it might seem crazy to pay so much for a photographer just for a day ("Does that mean I'm paying $500/hr?!"), but a good photographer will have met with you in advance, been responsive throughout the process, taken thousands of photos they need to sort through one by one, hand edit each photo, and deliver them to you. This all takes dozens of hours, so understand this money is well-spent! Plus, these photos will last a lifetime.
